Divorce and Separation
The process of divorce is a deeply personal experience for every person involved. Children of divorced parents may struggle to work through the complex emotional loss within the family. Children need support, education, time, and communication in order to normalize a life with two homes, blended families, parents in conflict, and the myriad of variables that shift in the process of separation and divorce. They may also need to know that although their parents are divorcing, they are not changing their commitment as parents to their children. A therapeutic relationship that stays separate from parent conflict and court proceedings, sometimes called a safe harbor therapeutic relationship, can be the protected space a child needs in order to work through this transition without feeling caught in the middle.
